Wolves, Ravens and the Value of Long-Term Observation

Wolves and ravens share landscapes, and frequently share meals. Documented associations between the two species — ravens following wolf packs, wolves tolerating ravens at kills — raise serious scientific questions about association, information transfer, communication cues, movement, scavenging ecology and possible interspecific cooperation. Long-duration, continuous observation of these interactions in the wild remains rare.

ULFR's flagship scientific programme will investigate exactly that: naturally occurring wolf–raven interactions, using GPS/satellite telemetry for suitable wolf individuals — subject to veterinary, ethical and legal approval — lightweight raven telemetry only where scientifically justified and demonstrably compatible with welfare, and camera traps, acoustic monitoring, remote sensing and field observation. AI-assisted pattern detection may serve as an analytical tool, never as a substitute for biological interpretation.

The discipline is open: ULFR will test hypotheses rather than presume conclusions, and results may confirm, weaken or reject them. And it should be stated plainly — ULFR is not a wolf organisation. Wolves and ravens are the flagship research relationship within a wider commitment to functioning ecosystems.

This programme is currently in concept. No telemetry has been deployed and no data exists. When it begins, methods, ethics approvals and findings will be published here.
